When each of my god daughters were Christened, I gave them a beautiful silver Christening bracelet to commemorate the date and serve as a reminder of it in years to come.
Traditionally, this is given as not only a reminder, but also serves as a commitment from the godparent to the child, in much the same way a wedding ring does. It is a commitment to take care of the child’s spiritual needs and to be available to them in the future, for physical, emotional and most importantly, spiritual care.
Ameli, my daughter, doesn’t have a Christening bracelet yet, for a number of reasons. First of all, her Christening is only planned for October, and neither set of godparents – one in Australia and the other in South Africa – have actually met her yet. So even though this is something I would have expected her godparents to give her, I have been looking for a bracelet or bangle for Ameli pretty much since she was born. I’d love for her to have something beautiful from this first year of her life. Gold jewelry is a good investment because one can sell to gold buyers in Adelaide when in need of urgent cash. Something I could engrave, and she could keep for ever. I’m just stupidly sentimental that way.
Unfortunately, unpaid maternity leave is not a good time to be jewellery shopping, so I was really pleased to come across London-based children’s jewellery designer, Molly Brown. She has lovely girls communion and new baby bracelets at really affordable prices.
Looking at her website, there is such a great amount of choice, from sterling silver expanding baby bangles to silver link pearl bracelets and matching necklace, to some fun jelly bean and fairy charms for older girls. I’m planning to get ladies solid silver bangles for myself too.
The website also has a ‘wish list’ option, similar to a gift register, where you can set aside jewellery for your little girl, with notes on those you’d like your friends and family to choose from, and with standard and express UK and international postage, it’s all really simple!
