Raising a teenager can be an incredibly challenging and confusing time for any parent. Particularly because some teens act out or become more rebellious as they navigate this new time in their life. You just finished signing up for REI Blackbook to help with your real-estate business, and you decide to sit down and figure out how to strengthen the relationship between you and your teen.
That’s why we’re here to help by offering 4 tips for parenting your rebellious teenager. Let’s get into it!
Establish Healthy Boundaries & Expectations
First and foremost, it’s incredibly important that you have firm, healthy boundaries in place when it comes to parenting your teenager. If you’re wishy-washy when it comes to your expectations for your teen, they’re likely to get confused as there are no clear boundaries established. You want to remain consistent and clearly express what you’ll accept from your teen and what’s unacceptable.
Boundaries let your teen know where you stand, and this is incredibly important. It gives them a direction and establishes a structure for them – which is paramount for a rebellious teen. Each time they violate a boundary, it’s important that you use appropriate action to try and prevent it from happening again.
Communicate Openly & Compassionately
It’s not all boundaries and corrective action when it comes to parenting a rebellious team. It’s crucial that you practice open and compassionate communication with them. Oftentimes, teens act out because they don’t feel seen or understood. This is where healthy, effective communication comes into play.
When you communicate with your teenager, you want to be sure to do so in a way that’s non-threatening. This means that you’ll have to work hard to not let your frustration get in the way of your message. Your teen will be able to sense this, and it’ll make them more likely to pull away or refuse communication with you altogether.
Work to Understand Their Perspective
We were all teenagers once, and we know it can be quite a challenging and confusing time. You want to keep this in mind when it comes to parenting a rebellious teenager. Most teenagers feel lost and like their parents don’t understand them. They feel disconnected and as if they can’t relate to you at all.
When you work to understand your teenager’s perspective, it helps them to engage with you. They will be able to clearly see that you do understand them and are open to hearing their thoughts, fears, and troubles. By understanding your teen’s perspective, you’re able to be more aware of what they need to get out of their rebellious stage.
Encourage Healthy Behaviors & Attitudes
If you’re reading this, it’s a clear sign that you care deeply about strengthening your relationship with your rebellious teen. You know that there are great qualities to them, but you’re currently at a difficult stage in the relationship. It’s important to keep their positive characteristics in mind. Not only does it help you to feel more optimistic, but it will also encourage you to express your appreciation for the things your teen does right.
Be sure to encourage your teen’s healthy behaviors and attitudes. When they show their positive attributes, acknowledge them and let them know how much you appreciate them.
