Friday Features: ME!

Ha – Yes, I’m being totally cheeky and featuring myself today. Well, not myself, so much as asking you to do me a huge favour and vote for me.

We’ve been nominated in two categories in the annual MADS blog awards and I’m totally thrilled! Last year and the year before we were nominated in just one category, so this is already a step up!

To give you a bit of background: Over 3,000 parenting blogs were nominated in the various categories, and the blogs with the most nominations in each category were shortlisted – so to make it to the top handful in two categories is pretty big and I’m over the moon!

These shortlisted blogs are now put to a public vote, and the one with the most votes wins. Apparently there have been over 50,000 votes so far, which is pretty incredible, seeing as you can only vote once!

I’m pretty rubbish at this self-promotion thing, so I haven’t contacted my local radio station and news paper to get them to write about me and ask people to vote, and I’m not going to, but since you’re here, I though I’d ask you!

Win or lose, I’ll still be here, plugging away, and I’ll still have my opinions, and my photos and my competitions and my girls… but with a win, maybe I can convince hubby that I really do need that new camera I’ve been lusting over! But then, finally having a ‘winner’ badge for one of the categories wouldn’t hurt either! And we’re pretty sure this is the last time I qualify for best pregnancy blog too!

So… if you’d like to vote for us for best pregnancy blog we’d really appreciate it. I’ve written a plethora of posts around gentle birth, preparing for a birth, preparing an older sibling for a new arrival, preparing an older sibling for the actual birth and there are even a few birth stories on there too.

We’d also appreciate a vote for best baby blog because, well, isn’t Aviya just beautiful? No, I’m just kidding. I’ve been told that people really like the letters I write to Ameli and Aviya each month, and then there are all the new baby pictures in the weekly Mamatography posts too.

Well – I hope you’re convinced, and I do hope you’ll vote for us!

(Voting closes at 5pm on the 6th of June and you can only vote once. Winners will be announced in September)

A Little Bit MAD (Awards)

This is total self promotion and self indulgence, so bare with me!  Remember how I’ve been asking you to vote for us in the MAD Awards? Well, they’ve asked us to do a vlog – a video blog – introducing ourselves and talking about what makes us special.

Well, honestly, I share myself and my thoughs with you pretty much every day, and everyone that knows me will tell you I’m better at writing than talking, especially since my tongue ring exacerbates my lisp (what, you never noticed? it does. and i do,yes.) I had to go for speach classes and all when I was a child! The red river runs through Reoboth. Cruel, when you have a lisp and a tongue tie, I assure you.

Anyway, so here’s my little ‘vote for me’ video, or my ad campaign as I’ve taken to calling it. Enjoy 😉

Friday Favourites – An AP Blogger Needs Your Help

My Friday Favourite is a bit of a cheeky one this week. See, I’m asking you to make Diary of a First Child a favourite, even if just for today.

The British parent blogging community is small – much smaller than that in the US – but powerful. I’ve seen some quick and amazing turnarounds from companies when ‘confronted’ by the social media frenzy (think Amazon’s paedophile book, although that wasn’t UK only!) and it’s been pretty incredible being part of that over the last year.

Every year there’s a blog award ceremony for the best of British Mum and Dad Blogs, known as the MAD Blog Awards.

MAD Blog Awards 2011Unfortunately, it’s a voting competition, which I really dislike (because then it becomes more about how many people you pester for votes, rather than the merit of the blog itself – although you could argue that the better the blog, the more readers, therefore the more votes?).

I would like to ask a huge favour from you. Please can you nominate Diary of a First Child?

While it’s terribly cliché to say ‘Awards don’t matter’, the truth is they do. Not to me as a writer, and not to the message I’m trying to share, but they do to sponsors, and they do as far as exposure goes.

The most amazing part of blogging, for me, has been the changes it has made for people. People who now use cloth because I changed their perception on it, people who have continued breastfeeding longer than they ever thought they would, because they learned so much from something I wrote. People who have discovered Baby Led Weaning as an alternative to costly purees. And on and on goes the list.

There are also painfully few UK Attachment Parenting blogs in the UK – there are blogs that focus on home schooling, and a few on breastfeeding, and some bloggers even write about AP topics from time to time, but Diary of a First Child is a rarity in its field. And, to the best of my knowledge, the only one of its kind in the British Mummy (and Daddy) Blogger community.

So – I’m asking that you nominate Diary of a First Child in the Inspirational Blogger category – for my own benefit, yes, but hopefully also that of other new parents, or parents looking for a different way.

To nominate you have to nominate a Blogger of the Year (feel free to nominate me there too, if you don’t have any other UK blogs in mind) and then you can nominate as many or few from the 14 other categories too – but don’t nominate me in every category, or your entry will be void! (I’m not a pregnant, baby or new blog, for example!)

Of course, if I’m short-listed there’ll be a vote in a few weeks time, but I’ll let you know about it then – in the meantime, every nomination counts as only the top five are short-listed.

And that’s the end of my grovelling. Friday Favourites will return next week as usual 🙂
