With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about what gifts we’ll be giving family and friends. Rather than rushing your shopping and buying things last minute, take some time to think about what you can give people that will be particularly meaningful for them. The holiday season doesn’t have to just be about getting more “stuff”, it’s about sharing, goodwill and spending time with our family and loved ones.
Here are four ways you can help make sure you are giving someone a meaningful present:
- Donate to a charity that means something to them
As nice as it is to receive gifts, most of us actually don’t need any more “stuff”. A lovely way of extending some good during the festive season and giving someone a meaningful gift is to make a donation to a charity that is close to their heart.
Still want to give them something physical under the tree? If the donation is for British Heart Foundation you could add the donation card to a box of heart-shaped cookies. Farm Africa? How about a selection of farm animal cookie cutters? You can be creative and mail cookies to someone who is special!
- Give them a book
It doesn’t all have to be about the latest tech or gadgets! Giving someone a book with personalized note cards inside is a lovely gesture to make and actually gives them something special that they can keep for years. Bonus points if the book is on something that they’re really interested in, a story set in somewhere they love, or an early or rare edition of a beloved book.
- Ask them what they would like
Seems like an obvious tip but sometimes simply asking someone what they would like to receive can be a great way to ensure that they get something meaningful for them. I know I’d rather have a £10 Amazon voucher for my next two or three books than a £20 bath gift set or another pretty candle.
- Spend meaningful time together
This doesn’t actually have to cost a penny and can be an incredibly meaningful gift to give someone, a shared experience and your time. Maybe book a concert or a weekend away in the summer? Wrap the tickets up in a box from the recycling and you have something to put under the tree. You could plan a day out together, take them to their favorite asian restaurant or even book into a spa or somewhere similar for a day of relaxation.
